One of the most amazing sites to see in the Interlaken area is the great north face
of the Jungfrau and the surrounding peaks. They are spectacular!
We watched the weather for days hoping that we would have a clear day to make the ascent,
but the Jungfrau remained socked in with clouds.
On our last morning in the Interlaken area, we rose early based on reports that there might
be a break in the clouds. Well, the early bird gets to go up the mountain!
We were so excited!
We were so excited!
We caught our first train in the village of Grindelwald.
From there we took the first leg of a breathtaking journey up the mountain.
It started out with green rolling hills...
It started out with green rolling hills...
...but the scenery changed rather quickly during the ascent.
When we reached a junction called Kleine Scheidegg, we switched trains.
Now we were in a cog train with a pathway literally dug inside the mountain.
When we arrived the top, we were at the highest railway platform in all of Europe and one of the highest points as well - hence it's tag line, "The Top of Europe."
It may have been a balmy, sun-filled day down in the valley, but up here, it was cold and windy...
...but spectacular!!
Back inside, they have a series of ice caves carved out of the glacier.
We thought this guy looked like Rodin's, "The Thinker" - Alpine style
- but really it was a carving of Adolf Guyer-Zeller the guy who dreamed up this project in 1893.
We think he looks like a brave knight indeed. :)
